A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” declared the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed pending a thorough technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
