The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
