Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, after the opener made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
